New Safety Standards in ISO/TC 244 and CEN/TC 186

May 2015

(Industrial furnaces and associated processing equipment - Safety)

Over the past few years, the standardisation experts of the thermo processing sector have focused on the development of safety standards within ISO.

As a result, the following ISO standards are now available:

ISO 13574 Terminology
ISO 13577-1 General safety requirements
ISO 13577-2 Safety requirements for combustion and fuel handling systems
ISO/DIS 13577-3 Safety requirements for atmospheric gases
ISO 13577-4 Safety - protective system

In addition, a series of standards, ISO 13579-1 to -4, concerning measuring methods for energy consumption has been published.

ISO 13579-1 Energy balance and efficiency - General methodology
ISO 13579-2 Energy balance and efficiency - Reheating furnace for steel
ISO 13579-3 Energy balance and efficiency - Batch type aluminium melting furnace
ISO 13579-4 Energy balance and efficiency - Controlled atmosphere furnace

It is assumed that the ISO member countries (except the CEN member states) will implement these standards on a national basis.

As the next step, CEN/TC 186 proposes to incorporate the ISO standards into the European body of standards. Differences between the content of ISO and EN standards are to be avoided in order to ensure uniform safety standards that apply throughout Europe, and throughout the world. It is necessary to transpose the ISO standards into EN standards as these safety standards must be harmonised in accordance with the European Machinery Directive.

It is proposed that the following standard numbers should be assigned. These are still subject to approval by CEN/TC 186.

ISO 13574 => EN ISO 13574 Terminology
ISO 13577-1 => EN 746-1 General safety requirements
ISO 13577-2 => EN 746-2 Safety requirements for combustion and fuel handling systems
ISO 13577-3 => EN 746-3 Safety requirements for atmospheric gases
ISO 13577-4 => EN 746-11 Safety - protective system
ISO 13579-1 => EN 746-20 Energy balance and efficiency - General methodology
ISO 13579-2 => EN 746-21 Energy balance and efficiency - Reheating furnace for steel
ISO 13579-3 => EN 746-22 Energy balance and efficiency - Batch type aluminium melting furnace
ISO 13579-4 => EN 746-23 Energy balance and efficiency - Controlled atmosphere furnace

As ISO 13577-2 only applies to gas and oil combustion systems, the safety requirements for solid fuel combustion systems should be laid down in a separate standard (e.g. EN 746-12).

Surveys on this matter are to be conducted within CEN/TC 186 in the near future.

In addition, the field of activities of ISO/TC 244 has been expanded to include arc furnaces. At the European standardization level, this topic is covered by CEN/TC 322. A working paper based on EN 14681 is under discussion within ISO/TC 244/WG7.

Furthermore, ISO 13577-1 and 13579-1 are currently being revised.
